volcanoes national park is the oldest national park in africa.it was initiala small area around Kalisimbi, mikeno, and visoke volcanoes  wich was gazetted to protect the mountain gorillas which were facing the threat of extenction as a result of poaching.
In 1929 the park was extended into Rwanda and the Belgian condo and was named albert national park managed and run by belgian colonial authories.during early 1960 ,the park was divided as rwanda and congo gained their independance and by the end of that decade the park was almost half of its original size

In 1967 , the american zoologist DIane Fossey who had been doing research
on moutain gorillas ing the forest of congo fled from insecurity and established her research base at place between Visoke and Kalisimbi  volcanoes  that was yet to be known as karisoke volcanoes research  center. she spearheaded the conservation campaign of the mountain gorillas and mobilized resources fight against poaching in this area . a fight  she put up until her murder in 1985. she was buried at the research center next to the grabe of her favorite gorilla called Digit
the park continued to suffer at the mercies of poacher though conservation efforts were also under way. In early 1990s,the park became a battle field for the Rwanda's civil wae which paralyzed tourism  activities until 1999. in 2005, in a bid to boost conservation and gorillas tours in volcan oes national park ,Rwanda introduced the annual baby naming ceremony for baby gorillas known as "kwita izina"which has seen great results in as far as gorilla population volcanoes is concerned

It’s no secret that gorilla trekking, the Nyungwe Forest and Akagera National Park are the destinations most sought after by international tourists and expats living in Rwanda. However, for those of us who have been living in Rwanda for a while and have already checked the above off their to-do list (or quite simply cannot afford them) there aren’t too many alternatives for recreation and adventure in this tiny country unless you have your own gear. Thankfully there are other options that are becoming available thanks to efforts by the Rwandan government as well as enterprising expats and locals.

One of the newest developments is the Congo-Nile Trail. Officially opened at the end of 2009, the Congo-Nile Trail is actually a tangled network of trails and roads that run from Gisenyi at the north end of Lake Kivu 227 kilometers south to the town of Cyangugu at the southern end of the lake. The landscape between these two familiar points is made up of unending rolling hills and innumerable towns and villages, offering cyclists and trekkers a glimpse of Rwandan rural life rarely experienced by the city dwellers that make up most of Rwanda’s expat community. Bird lovers will also enjoy a wonderful diversity of fowl found along the way, including white tailed blue flycatchers, black headed herons and White-breasted cormorants.for more soon...
